Bitcoin mining algorithm will regain its throne in 2025

7 months ago 3 Min Read

When 2024 ended, the SHA256 consensus algorithm used by Bitcoin ranked third in profitability, but now, kicks off in June 2025, it shares the top spot matching Litecoin’s Scrypt.

Sha256 and Scrypt Tie for Top Mining Profits in June 2025

On December 29th, 2024, Scrypt, the Mining Method for Litecoin (LTC) and Dogecoin (Doge), sat neatly as the main mining algorithm. Fast forward to June 2025 and the table has changed. Sha256 claims hair, albeit only, thanks to Bitmain’s Antminer S21E XP Hydro 3U unit.

Using a median of $0.10 per kilowatt hours (kWh), the Antminer S21E XP Hydro 3U removes an estimated $18.24 per day based on existing hashprices. Essentially, a hashpris is the calculated value (TH/S and PH/S) of 1 terahash or petahash per second of daily hash power. If you track Antminer boasts 860 Th/s, you’ll find the Volcminer D1 Hydro, the creation of Teckvia Limited.

At $0.10 per kWh rate, the Volcminer D1 Hydro pulls around $17.55 a day, at 30 Gigahash (GH/s). Following Sha256 and Scrypt, Zksnark appears as the next top winner to mine digital asset areo. The numbers reveal that the Zksnark hash power 300 megahash (MH/s) per second is converted to around $10.07 per day. Random mining is also making money, and in 2025 Monero (XMR) prices are on good terms. Approximately 212 kilo hash (kh/s) of hashrate generates an estimated $9.70 per day.

Under the Zksnark and RandomX algorithms there are Kaspa (Kas) Kheavyhash Consensus Algorithm and Ethereum Classic (ETC) Ethash. The mining sector hierarchy has changed dramatically since 2022, when Cadena and Script ruled, and the Ethereum Proof (POS) transition has overturned the market. By 2025, relentless ASIC advances, like Bitmain’s Hydro-Cooled S21E XP, have brought the Sha256 back up.

At the same time as this evolution, Scrypt, Zksnark, and RandomX established a formidable second layer. Operational effectiveness, not merely the value of digital currency, is currently controlling profitability. The microenhancement of calculated power and power utilization distinguishes between successful ventures and outdated equipment. Only instability continues: Techniques like Kheavyhash and Eaglesong previously excelled in 2023, but the veteran enemy (SHA256) bounced back for innovative technological leap in hardware.
