According to a joint statement released on June 6, 2025, 31 Bitcoin Core developers have a clear attitude about how the network handles non-financial use. They emphasized that their role is not to support or block data inscriptions or other non-financial activities.

The move stimulates strong emotions across the community, and there is debate that touches on freedom, fees and Bitcoin’s purpose.

Developer Stance on Data Policy

Based on the report, the core team said they would not step in to stop “harmless” data from entering the blockchain. They pointed out that the main strength of Bitcoin is its resistance to censorship. Therefore, all user-driven software options need to stand up.

They made it clear: it’s up to the node operator to choose what they accept. This approach aims to keep the network free, even if it means carrying additional data.

The voices of the community are divided

The statement was followed by a response. Jan3 CEO Samson Mow called developer Tone Hollow and said the recent changes “opened Floodgates” of spam. He argued that removing technical barriers would promote unnecessary data.

Conversely, CASA’s Jameson Lopp praised the clear explanation of the relay rules. Lopp pointed out that a unified voice from developers can help reduce past confusion over policy.

Recent Upgrade Spark worries

On May 8, 2025, the core developer removed the long-standing limit on transaction data sizes. This tweak allows anyone to include large chunks of information in their transactions. Critics are worried that this will drive blockchain bulging and increase prices.

Supporters say predicting what the miners will include and what they will pass on is key to making Bitcoin run smoothly. They argue that this neutral relay policy is useful for miners and users alike.

Future forks and layer solutions

Looking ahead, some think that new forks can split the “pure money” chain that blocks data inscriptions. Others predict that a Layer 2 network or sidechain will take on heavy lifting of art, messaging and other uses.

In any case, most of the time, the wallet and node software agree to provide the option immediately. One is for clean, financial only transactions, and the other is for those who don’t mind additional data. This choice allows users to vote in settings rather than relying on developers to make calls.
