The US government is said to hold much less bitcoin than estimates – big in the case of truth

7 months ago 2 Min Read

Former USMS (USMS), a member of the US Department of Justice, announced in its official response dated July 15, 2025 that only 28,988 bitcoins remain in the state.

This figure represents a significant decrease from the previously publicly estimated roughly 200,000 BTC, worth around $3.44 billion at current prices.

The documents shared on March 24, 2025 in response to a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request include a detailed breakdown of the government’s Bitcoin holdings. USMS said the information in these documents was compiled by the Asset Forbidden Division (AFD). The agency also emphasized that several pages of the memorandum have been partially censored and shared.

A complete list of BTC Holdings. The request was dated March 24th, and the response will start today. I’ll send you your email, I’ll send you the file.

Total BTC holdings are 28,988.35643016, or approximately $3.44 billion at current prices.

USMS regularly sells digital assets through public auctions, so unless official sales are announced, this list is assumed to be up to date and accurate.

The US government’s Bitcoin reserves have swelled over the years due to seizures following major lawsuits such as the Silk Road operation. However, recent data suggests that most of these assets are being liquidated.
