ZCASH integration is a cryptocurrency known for transactions protected by zero knowledge, and MetaMask shows advances in private finance accessibility in common and popular wallets. The development, announced to the public on July 21, 2025, allows users to send and receive armored ZCASH (ZEC) transactions that hide amounts and addresses directly from popular browser wallets, without the need for additional software or full nodes.
ZCASH has two transaction modalities: armor and transparent. first Hides the user’s public address, transaction amount, and note field (“Notes”). The transparent ones, on the other hand, serve as those of Bitcoin, where the address holdings and historic registrations of transactions are publicly available.
The project was facilitated by the ZCASH Community Grant (ZCG) and partially funded with a $150,000 grant from MetaMask Grant DAO and culminated in the creation of a “snap,” a range of metamasks that integrates ZCASH’s armored transactions.
This SNAP is based on WebZJS, a JavaScript library developed by Chainsafe that adapts Zcash complexes, such as the generation of ZK-Snarks (zero and non-interaction zero knowledge arguments). These calculations require test and sync keys using a light server such as LightWalletd. Now it is possible to support it with MetaMask.
The process began in 2024 with a feasibility study assessing the limits of browser memory and processing time. After confirming his feasibility, Chainsafe received two grants. The first one is for WebZJS and SNAP.
A key milestone arrived in September 2024, when the team completed their first “armored” transaction in the browser. The extension passed a security audit by Hacken and was announced in March 2025 at ZCONVI, the annual ZCASH community event.
The practical implementation video shows a simple metamask interface with ZCASH functionality. Users can “shield” funds (protegar loss) through encryption and receive an insured shipping confirmation as shown on the screen of «.Complete shield«.
