After celebrating its 10th anniversary, Ethereum unveiled a new vision that marks Lean Ethereum for the next 10 years.
The roadmap, which the Foundation describes as a “generational promise,” aims to drive Ethereum into a new era, both in performance and security. Target: 10,000 transactions per second (TPS), quantum resistant cryptography, and planetary sustainability.
According to the Ethereum Foundation, ETH must not only scale, but “survive against all possibilities.” After 10 years of downtime, the ETH network currently has $130 billion in economic security (approximately 35.7 million ETHs are betting). The foundation aims to reach $1 trillion in security in the future.
This approach, called “Fort Mode,” claims that Ethereum exists only when the Internet is present. A chain should exist only when the world is online. This mode is intended to provide Ethereum with resistance to all sorts of attacks, from government threats to quantum computers.
At the forefront of performance, Ethereum is preparing to enter “Beast Mode.” Low-cost efficiency improvements are expected in the next 6-12 months, but more fundamental steps are coming in the long term.
- L1 Target: 10,000 TPS Capacity with Gigagas Level Bandwidth
- L2 Target: Tier-2 Solutions to reach 1 million TPS with Terragas Capacity
This goal is supported by innovations such as ZKVMS (Zero-Aware Virtual Machine), Data Availability Sampling (DA), Full Chain Validation from Browsers, Wallets and Phones.
The Lean Ethereum approach redesigns the three layers that form the foundation of ETH.
- Lean Consensus (CL): Beacon Chain 2.0 has finality within seconds and involves excellent decentralization.
- Lean Data (DL): More flexible data processing using post-Quantum compatible data blocks (BLOBS 2.0).
- Lean Run (EL): A new snark compatible, minimal, but EVM compatible virtual machine (probably based on RISC-V).
The Ethereum Foundation concludes its statement with the following words:
“Lean Ethereum is a generational promise to keep Ethereum online on all terms, scale without compromise, and make it worthy of those who come after us.”
