Digital Treasury is under pressure, but Ethereum is strong – Stanchat

4 months ago 2 Min Read

According to Geoffrey Kendrick, Head of Digital Asset Research at Standard Chartered, the Ministry of Finance for Digital Assets is under new pressure after a sharp decline in the market net asset value (MNAV).

Listed companies that hold digital assets on their balance sheets known as digital assets financial assets or DATS have seen their share prices fall in recent weeks as investors reassess the sustainability of their strategy.

Kendrick said that MNAVs above 1 are essential for DATS to expand their holdings, and values below that threshold indicate weak balance sheet and potential integration.

Distinguishing between data

Kendrick said the current recession could create opportunities for differentiation rather than marking the end of the sector.

Factors such as access to low-cost funds, the benefits of scaling, and yields from staking and debt are expected to separate stronger players from weaker players.

Ethereum-centric data is considered the most sustainable as staking returns can directly enhance MNAV. Bitmine strategist Tom Lee estimates that on its own staking can add 0.6 points to the MNAV of Ethereum-based data.

This dynamic places Ethereum vehicles more favorably than those tied primarily to Bitcoin and Solana.

Impact on the crypto market

The data collectively holds around 4% of Bitcoin, 3.1% of Ethereum and 0.8% of Solana in the circulation, making it a key factor in health demand.

Kendrick said that integration among Bitcoin’s Treasury is more likely, leading to coin spin rather than new purchases. In contrast, Ethereum data is ready to continue to accumulate, offering a strong tailwind on ether prices compared to its rivals.

Key players in this sector include Bitmine, Sharplink and Ether Machine. All of this is closely monitored by investors who track the intersection of a company’s balance sheet and digital assets.
