Spain gives custody of seized Bitcoin to Prosegur

2 months ago 3 Min Read

Spain’s Interior Ministry today gave Mr. Prosegur control of Bitcoin (BTC) and other virtual currencies seized in a police raid. The 2.8 million euro (equivalent to approximately $3.24 million) contract will take effect within three months and will last for four years.

The agreement is published on the Public Sector Contracts Portal. Covers cloud management and storage based on the Crypto Asset Market Act (mica).

The European Regulation on the Regulation of Digital Asset Markets does not provide for direct obligations on countries to employ crypto asset custodians (CASPs), specifically to protect against seizure and confiscation. However, this regulation regulates storage services in general, and Spain needs to select companies that are subject to the MiCA regulation.

According to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) listing, there is no evidence that Prosegur has yet obtained a license as a crypto asset service provider, but the company is already actively exploring this area. Additionally, existing suppliers should take into account that until 30 December 2025, existing suppliers can operate without a full license, provided they meet the prerequisites.

This Spanish company provides cash storage for the world’s largest institutions, among other security services. and Two years ago, the company launched Prosegur Crypto.

“This is one of the initiatives we started two years ago, thinking that if we are custodians of paper money in the world, we can also be custodians of cryptocurrencies and tokenized assets in the same way,” José Ángel Fernández Freire, Innovation Director at Prosegur Cash, explained in an interview with CriptoNoticias.

In any case, there are no public, aggregated official records detailing the exact total amount of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies seized by Spain through November 2025. Authorities such as private security forces and national police forces publish figures for individual operations in annual reports and communications, without a unified global counter.

See also  There are already four banks in Spain licensed to operate cryptocurrencies.

As an example, in June of this year Spanish authorities reported As CriptoNoticias reported at the time, 490,000 euros worth of cryptocurrencies were seized.

Spain has a long history of seizing Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in police operations against money laundering and organized crime.

In April 2025, the country faced the theft of 17 million euros in digital assets held in judicial custody in the country’s largest crypto asset operation to date. This fact resulted in charges against members of the judicial authorities.

That’s why Prosegur has taken the initiative to bring the country in line with European Union standards and to more safely manage seizures.
