In 2025, meme coins once again topped the list of most popular cryptocurrency stories, according to CoinGecko’s latest report.
As the speculative frenzy surrounding these tokens subsides slightly, combined interest in the major meme coin categories and 35 related trends captured 25.02% of global investor attention, down slightly from 30.67% last year.
Meme coins and AI sweep investor interest
Within this broad category, major meme coins led the way with a share of 12.48%, down from 14.36% in 2024. Nevertheless, it retained the top spot for two consecutive years after ranking third in 2023. Other meme coins continue to trend well, with Solana Meme Coin in 6th place with an interest rate of 4.57%, AI Meme Coin in 18th place with an interest rate of 1.51%, and Base Meme Coin following. Investor attention was 1.40%, placing it in 19th place.
AI-related cryptocurrency stories will continue to gain traction in 2025, accounting for 22.39% of overall interest, up from 15.67% in 2024. The individual share of the main AI cryptocurrency category declined slightly from 12.58% last year to 9.76% this year, but it remained in second place in overall popularity.
The increased interest in AI cryptography was primarily driven by the focus on AI agents and the emergence of the DeFAI story. Among the top 20 narratives, AI agents recorded the most significant year-over-year increase, increasing their market share from 1.17% to 5.03% and moving up 14 places in the ranking.
RWA fell out of the top three
Meanwhile, real world assets (RWA) have seen the sharpest decline in interest in cryptocurrencies this year. CoinGecko found that the category’s share declined from 8.64% in 2024 to 4.98% in 2025, which pushed RWA to fourth place from last year’s third place.
This is a further decline from the 6.48% share recorded in 2023 as competition for investor attention increases as more narratives enter the market.
Meanwhile, stablecoins recorded one of the most significant ranking improvements, rising from 31st place last year to 16th place in 2025. The stablecoin’s share of narrative interest increased from 0.48% to 1.69%. This signals increased activity in this space as additional protocols and blockchain networks move to introduce their own stablecoins.
