The Altcoin season looks ready to kickstart as Ethereum prices exceed Bitcoin prices during this period. Previous Bull Cycles prove that AltCoin season is round the corner whenever ETH exceeds BTC. This was a case in 2021, and we got a glimpse into this in May 2025. Now, as Ethereum widens the gap with Bitcoin, it appears that altcoin is ready to start its next rally.
Ethereum moves 24% ahead of Bitcoin
In July so far, Bitcoin prices have already risen to several new all-time highs, moving back down to more than $23,000. This has earned BTC’s monthly double-digit profit, with Cryptorank data rising more than 12.3% so far this month.
Unlike the previous month where Ethereum prices are behind Bitcoin, ETH is currently leading in terms of profit. The second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization has grown by more than 45% this month alone, after surpassing the $3,100 level. This makes it 33% ahead of Bitcoin, indicating a trending turn.
The last time Ethereum prices surpassed Bitcoin in 2025 came back in May, when it won 41.1% that month, compared to 11.1% of BTC. That same month, major altcoins shot rapidly, with many 50-100% rising during this period.
Given this historic performance, the Altcoin market has already enjoyed an out-of-performance dividend from Ethereum. However, despite the BTC price almost doubled, the new all-time high remains elusive of ETH, despite the last peak at $4,800.
ETH is still driving the Altcoin season
Ethereum’s outperformance brings the promise of the Altcoin season as the big Altcoins gather alongside it. Over the past 90 days used to calculate the Altcoin Season Index, ETH prices have exceeded 125% compared to about 41.5% of Bitcoin in this period.
CoinmarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index has also moved beyond the 43-point mark. In other words, the top 100 Altcoins M43 by market capitalization is currently outperforming Bitcoin. This number means that the Altcoin season hasn’t started yet, but it’s a step in the right direction.
Normally, when the index reaches the 75% mark, the Altcoin season is in earnest. This means that 75 of the top 100 altcoins outweigh Bitcoin for 90 days. Second, if the index exceeds the 90% mark and surpasses the 90 Altcoins, it will be considered the top of the Altcoin season.
