Coinbase-Backed Base, Ethereum Layer 2 networks are configured to upgrade significantly, faster, cheaper and more decentralized.

Base’s lead developer Jesse Pollak posted a network upgrade plan on X on May 24th.

Coinbase executives explained that the improvements will expand the base to meet the increased demand from both users and developers.

According to Pollak, the team is working to reduce transaction verification time to 200 milliseconds and keep network fees below $0.01.

These two goals are part of a broader plan to process over 200 transactions over a second in the short term. Pollak confirmed that the base aims to reach 1 million TP in the end.

Pollack also emphasized that the base is heading towards a more decentralized architecture. This plan involves directly shifting key components of the protocol, such as basic state transition logic, directly to layer 1 of Ethereum via smart contracts.

This change allows multiple independent developers and validators to shape the evolution of the network.

The base has undergone several infrastructure upgrades to support these enhancements. The goal is to make it the most scalable and user-friendly Ethereum Layer 2 network.

The center of the upgrade is the flash block. This is a system that allows for “pre-registration blocks” nearby, providing users with a faster and smoother experience. The team has already conducted a testnet trial and hopes to introduce a mainnet update by the summer of 2025.

The Coinbase Assistance Network plans to expand gas throughput. The base is targeting a rise from the current 25 million gas (MGAS/s) in Q2 to 50 mgas/s, which will ultimately reach 250 mgas/s by the end of the year. This gives you a 100x improvement over the original capacity.

Pollak believes these upgrades will significantly increase the speed and efficiency of the base. When fully implemented, the network can be placed as a strong competitor in chains such as Solana and SUI.
