Semler Scientific (SMLR) Chairman Eric Semler has called on Viant Technology (DSP) to adopt a Bitcoin (BTC) financial strategy, claiming the move can unlock key shareholder value for struggling ad technology companies.

Eric Semler urges viant technology to adopt Bitcoin’s financial strategy amid stock turmoil

In a work featured in X, Semler cited Viant’s lagging inventory performance and large cash reserves as indications that the company is “ripening” due to bold strategic change. Viant’s shares have fallen 44% since its 2021 IPO, falling 50% in February alone, sparking investors’ concerns about its long-term growth trajectory.

Despite market pessimism, Viant remains financially healthy. The company has held $205 million in net cash, which generated approximately 25% of its $900 million market capitalization, $34 million in free cash flow in 2024, and at least $205 million in net cash that has been a project to make stable growth in 2028.

Semler, who recently led Semler Scientific’s move as a financial asset to Bitcoin, has been labelled Viant along with Zoom Communications (Zoom) and Coursera (Cour), with an undeveloped capital and an unclear strategic orientation as part of what is called the “Zombie Zone.” Neither Zoom nor Coursera has listened to previous calls for adoption of Bitcoin.

Founded by the Vanderhoek brothers, Viant has already shown interest in the crypto space. Co-founder Chris Vanderhook said it previously supported decentralized technology and is important for what they call blockchain, NFTS and Crypto the “new open web.”

Viant also faces increased competitive pressure from industry giants like Google and Amazon, and Google and Amazon continue to integrate their power in the digital advertising ecosystem. Meanwhile, commoditizing demand-side platforms is further challenging middle market players like Viant.

Semler argues that the move to Bitcoin will help differentiate Viant from its competitors and can provide hedge against inflation and financial instability.
