The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has announced the creation of a new internal working group dedicated to developing tools and protocols that promote user privacy.

In a statement on October 8, the organization described the formation of the Privacy Cluster (the “Privacy Group”), which is coordinated by developer Igor Barinov and brings together 47 researchers, engineers, and cryptographers.

According to EF, the new group will focus on working on several initiatives being developed for the Ethereum ecosystem.

  • private read and write (Private Read and Write): Aims to enable private payments, voting, and interactions without leaking metadata or causing data breaches.
  • private proof (Private Attestation): Aims to optimize cryptographic attestation for verifying identity and assets without exposing unnecessary information.
  • private identity (Private Identity): Focus on selective digital identity and zkID (zero knowledge identity) projects.
  • Privacy experience (Private Experience): We try to improve your experience using protocols with built-in privacy.

EF also announced the Institutional Privacy Task Force (IPTF), a multidisciplinary team that translates institutional regulatory requirements into technical privacy specifications.

Finally, we introduced Kohaku, a reference implementation that includes an SDK (software development kit) for wallets. According to EF, the tool will serve as a foundation for other developers to create wallets with privacy features built-in natively.

Kohaku is committed to making privacy not only possible, but accessible on a daily basis.

“Privacy and Security”Full stack” “(All layers) are a top priority on Ethereum,” said Vitalik Buterin of the X account.
