France rejects Bitcoin mining proposal

6 months ago 3 Min Read

The French National Assembly has decided not to discuss the subject of Bitcoin mining as a possible destination for French energy surplus. The recently introduced fix was rejected for procedural reasons. In other words, the intent of the measure has not been fully discussed.

The French Parliament is currently dodging Bitcoin mining proposals

Bitcoin is currently being debated as a high-level state policy in countries like France. The French National Assembly recently considered a proposal to introduce Bitcoin mining as a state activity, offering the possibility of using French energy overload to mine France as a state initiative.

The proposal introduced in Congress earlier this month did not propose directly allocate excess energy resources to Bitcoin, but it proposed simply studying the possibility of doing so.

The amendment to simplify current regulations in the economic and energy sector proposed to evaluate “the conditions for developing Bitcoin mining activities in France, tools to utilize surplus electricity production, stabilizing networks and optimizing the operation of the nuclear fleet.”

The revolutionary idea puts France at the forefront of the state’s adoption of Bitcoin mining, one of the only countries outside El Salvador and Bhutan, and has led to pondering its activities as part of its energy strategy.

The current proposal was rejected by the Congress and declared unacceptable “following Article 98 of the Parliament’s Procedure Rules.” Nevertheless, Article 98 is so broad and several interpretations have arisen, so it is still unclear why this rejection caused.

Local media reports that, like many proposals presented, it may have been rejected as it was thought to include provisions that added elements that were not directly related to the subject matter of the bill.

Objections relate only to the form of the proposal, and can present simpler revisions in the future, with the aim of introducing the same Bitcoin-related changes.

Nevertheless, local analysts say this doesn’t seem likely to happen in the short term, as bitcoin mining is considered an environmental disaster in France.
