Today, 12 people from one of the world’s leading human rights and humanitarian organizations gathered at London’s frontline clubs today to announce the formation of the Bitcoin Humanitarian Alliance. According to a press release sent to Bitcoin Magazine, the coalition is trying to leverage the power of Bitcoin to provide civil liberties, support dissidents, and provide assistance in cases where traditional financial systems are inadequate.
The Bitcoin Humanitarian Alliance website states that it is a “coalition of human rights defenders, democratic movements, and humanitarian organisations using Bitcoin to promote liberty and humanitarian aid for citizens around the world.”
“As a decentralized, borderless, and censor-resistant financial tool, Bitcoin operates outside the control of government, banks and businesses,” it further states on its website. “This means that humanitarian organizations can raise funds, move money across borders, and bypass financial suppression, but only if you understand how it works, how it will be used, and how Bitcoin is different from crypto.”
From helping political activists bypass financial censorship, to allowing life-saving funds to reach the crisis zone, Bitcoin has emerged as an important tool for nonprofits operating under extreme conditions. The Bitcoin Humanitarian Union aims to formalize and expand this work through coordination, shared knowledge and collective action.

“Bitcoin operates outside the control of government, banks and businesses,” said Eric Haasan, co-founder of the Bitcoin mining company, using African hydropower, who attended today’s announcement. “This means that humanitarian organizations can raise funds, move money across borders, and bypass financial suppression.”
The Alliance also hopes to promote wider adoption of Bitcoin and other decentralized technologies within the nonprofit sector. As stated in its mission, it defends “a new age of charity based on financial freedom, resilience and global inclusion.”
