The popular NFT Marketplace Magic Eden has acquired the Crypto Trading App Slingshot in a move that shows strategic change beyond its digital collections. The acquisition will allow Magic Eden users to directly access over 5 million tokens across more than 10 blockchains, except for the need for bridges and central exchange.

Slingshot will continue to work as a standalone app for now, but further integration with Magic Eden is expected. No immediate changes to the user experience have been announced, but support for Bitcoin native tokens is reportedly on the horizon.

Magic Eden’s leadership has shown that the move is part of a long-term effort to simplify crypto transactions across networks and asset types.

What is Slingshot?

Slingshot is a decentralized crypto trading application that allows users to exchange tokens across multiple blockchains without bridging assets or relying on a centralized platform.

The app supports transactions across over 10 blockchain networks using a single USDC balance and provides access to millions of tokens. With its estimated user base approaching one million, Slingshot is recognized with an emphasis on ease of use and multi-chain capabilities.

The aim is to streamline token discovery and trading by removing common friction points such as network switching and gas fee management.

What does this acquisition mean for Magic Eden?

For Magic Eden, the acquisition of Slingshot represents a place away from its original focus as an NFT-only platform. While continuing to support NFT trading, the company appears to be relocating itself as a more comprehensive Web3 trading hub.

“This acquisition is a major step forward in moving forward with Magic Eden Vision, providing the world with a seamless and secure way to buy and sell crypto and digital assets across all chains,” said Jack Lu, CEO and co-founder of Magic Eden.

By integrating token trading into the ecosystem, Magic Eden could expand its appeal to a wider segment of crypto users, particularly those seeking a unified interface for both NFTS and Fungible tokens. The platform will now work independently, but the long-term plan appears to include more closely technical and product coordination.
