Planck launches Layer-0 blockchain for artificial intelligence

5 months ago 3 Min Read

Planck, an infrastructure protocol targeting the artificial intelligence boom, has launched a Layer-0 blockchain aimed at supporting decentralized AI networks, the company said Tuesday.

Blockchain is designed to function as something built for the underlying infrastructure of AI applications, particularly for the distributed physical infrastructure network (Depins). These networks combine hardware, token incentives, and distributed processing to create alternatives to centralized resources such as cloud services.

This move coincides with an increasing push within the Crypto industry, bringing the principle of decentralisation of Web3 to AI development. This is still dominated by centralized players such as Openai and Google.

“High-performance AI computing is currently heavily centralized in the hands of a few high-tech giants,” a Planck spokesman told Cointelegraph.

Planck is one of several blockchain projects that are working on an alternative approach to AI decentralization. For example, Bittensor focuses on decentralized machine learning, while Fetch.ai facilitates the creation of AI agents through a distributed platform.

According to Planck, the blockchain generates protocol revenue from transaction fees, SDK usage and developer tools. Meanwhile, GPU operators providing computing resources are rewarded with the protocol’s native token based on the machine’s uptime (proof of connection) and actual usage (proof of delivery).

GPU rental and AI chip crunch

Most of Planck’s revenue comes from lending GPUs and calculating contracts. The company says models in demand per hour will slash up to 90% compared to traditional cloud services.

Since February, the company has generated $1.5 million in revenue, primarily from GPU-powered rentals. The company is also competing with other infrastructure providers such as Vast.ai, CoreWeave and Lambda, all of which are taking advantage of the ongoing shortage of AI chips.

This shortage has driven explosive growth in the GPU-As-a-Service sector as a service. According to a priority survey, the market will reach $4 billion in 2024, growing at a 23% annual rate, and is expected to reach $32 billion by 2034.

“Centralized AI calculations are extremely expensive. By decentralizing GPU networks, Planck can offer up to 90% cost savings,” a Planck spokesperson said.
