Fifteen years after programmers traded 10,000 BTC for two pizzas, the crypto community marked Bitcoin Pizza Day with a record-breaking celebration.
In 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz paid about $41 for Papa John’s pie, which became the first known real-world Bitcoin transaction. Today, these coins are worth $11.1 billion at the new all-time high of Bitcoin recorded during Asian sessions.
“It was exciting to get real pizza for Bitcoin at the time,” Honeyets told one outlet, adding that he was pretty stoic about the $1 billion valuation.
Global prize celebration
The anniversary elicited a global response, combining nostalgia with billion dollars of bravery.
Binance won corporate fees in the $5 million Bitcoin referral pool and capped a $40 payment per pair to nod in the original Pizza transaction.
“From two pizzas to the global financial movement… we’re marking Bitcoin Pizza Day at the value of $5 million, the biggest BTC referral giveaway in history,” said Binance CMO Rachel Conlan. The exchange also deployed pizza trucks and hosted parties across cities around the world.
The competitors weren’t too late. BTSE launched a $5.22 million USDT trading contest, repeating the date with a 5.22% BTC staking yield and a pizza-themed photo competition. HTX provided $200,000 worth of “surprise gifts” in a two-week campaign backed by seven Tron partners, and MEXC’s “Lucky Wheel” was spun for over $100,000 with BTC and tokens.
Events from Buenos Aires to Dubai will include DIY streams, community-driven meetups and branded gifts tailored through the new Pizza Day Hub.
The institutional waves flowing through Bitcoin clash with grassroots celebrations, turning what began as memes into a marketing supercycle.
Some observers have questioned whether Pizza Day’s Mass Giveaways will attract real users or simply pad up sign-up statistics. But as evidence that every meme in this market might turn into money, a billion dollar lunch endures.
