“The quantum threat is real and imminent for Bitcoin”: Ulisses Alains Cuellar

2 months ago 3 Min Read

Spanish computer scientist and university professor Ulises Arranz Cuellar warns that quantum computing represents an imminent risk to the stability of the Bitcoin network and the global financial system.

In a conversation with CriptoNoticias, he pointed out that quantum computers have the ability to break through current cryptographic systems. Curb not just digital currencies, but the entire global security infrastructure.

“The quantum threat is real and as pressing for Bitcoin as it is for other current crypto technologies,” Alanz Cuellar said.

He explained that cryptographic algorithms such as RSA are vulnerable to Scholl’s algorithm, a quantum method that is based on the difficulty of factoring large numbers and allows these calculations to be solved exponentially faster than classical computers.

“If these keys were to be breached, it would not just be Bitcoin or digital currencies that would be compromised; it would expose the entire global security and encryption system that the company supports, from banks to businesses and governments of all types.

Ulisses Arranz Cuéllar, quantum computing expert.

A professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid also emphasized this. Risks are not limited to real-time transactions. All information stored and encrypted in these ways covers virtually all data in electronic form and can be compromised.

“The magnitude of the risks is enormous, and the impact on Bitcoin and digital currencies is only a small part of a much larger impact,” he stressed.

In the face of this threat, Arranz Cuéllar emphasized: Governments such as the United States and the European Union are pushing for a transition to post-quantum cryptographydesigned to resist quantum computer attacks. As reported by CriptoNoticias, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is leading the effort to develop robust encryption algorithms.

This transition is the path that Bitcoin and cryptocurrency networks must also follow, the engineer said. Looking to the future, the adoption of post-quantum cryptography will be critical to securing financial and digital systems, and these sectors will need to accelerate efforts to adapt to this new technological reality.
